Neighbors,

This past week reminded me how important it is to stay connected to the people we serve. From walking block by block to gathering over 50 neighbors at Rica Arepa for a powerful cafecito, I had meaningful conversations with residents who brought real concerns to the table. We talked about drag racing, illegal dumping, and trash piling up in different parts of the ward. I also shared updates on the city budget, work underway to address troubled buildings, and new efforts to improve public safety and invest in our neighborhoods.

Every Tuesday and Sunday, I walk the ward and host community pop up events to make sure you have direct and consistent access to your alderperson and the city services you are entitled to. If we have not crossed paths yet, I will be at SRBCC on Monday, April 14 from 5 to 7 PM. I hope to see you there.

Trans Visibility

Trans Day of Visibility celebrates the contributions of the transgender and gender expansive community while also acknowledging the growing systemic challenges our trans siblings face. On Monday, I joined a phenomenal coalition of electeds, leaders, and activists at a press conference to reaffirm our love and commitment to protecting all of our queer community members, especially the most attacked and the most vulnerable. Read about all the powerful words shared here. Thank you Maria and Jai for joining me at City Hall.

Health Equity and Community Safety

On Tuesday, I presented at Equal Hope’s Health Equity Breakfast. I was able to reiterate how community development, criminal justice reform, and affordable housing are all roots that impact health factors. Safe neighborhoods and housing access are two key pillars of my work as an alder, and through my Community Safety and Zoning Committees, we’re been able to build networks of support. Despite the federal removal of many resources, including foundational CDPH programs, I stand firm to my commitment to prioritizing healthcare in the upcoming budget.

Tax Exemption

Many constituents have been visiting the office with their renewal notices for the tax exemptions. Cook County Commissioner Anthony Quezada’s team has been working hard to support neighbors with their applications at their office located at 2934 N Milwaukee. To schedule an appointment, you must live in the 8th District and call 312-603-6386. Find your Cook County district here.

Clean & Green

Spring is coming! If you haven’t noticed, Humboldt Park’s soccer field is currently in the process of receiving new turf. The field is fenced off, and the work will take about two months.

If you’re interested in beautifying your own green spaces, here are some upcoming opportunities.

  • Saturday, April 12: Chicago’s Citywide Clean & Green

    • Department of Streets & Sanitation will provide volunteer groups will receive tools and bags for clean-up projects

    • Call 311 or use the CHI311 app to register your group by Monday, April 7

  • Saturday, April 26: Earth Day Clean Up

Actively engaging in the maintenance of our spaces is what makes our community strong, safe, and welcoming. Thank you in advance for your commitment to pitching in to make the 26th Ward the best in the city!

This week, the Community Safety Committee gathered to kick off preparations for a busy spring and summer in the 26th Ward. The committee, composed of community organizations, is gearing up for several key events, including the Memorial Day Unity Walk & Cookout, the Puerto Rican Festival, and Earth Day celebrations in Humboldt, Simons, Mozart, and Maple Parks. In addition, the committee is rallying support for the upcoming DCFS Spring Employment Expo Job Fair and the Gun Violence Conference by recruiting participants and volunteers. We will host a Community Safety Town Hall on May 21 at 6pm at Blackhawk Park. Community organizations will be on hand to provide helpful resources and address any concerns residents may have about safety and crime in the ward. This week’s meeting also welcomed representatives from Cabrini Green Legal Aid, who offered information about expungement services for those seeking to clear their records. Looking ahead, the committee has scheduled additional safety pop-ups and neighborhood walks in areas experiencing high crime. As always, We Keep Us Safe!

In solidarity,

Alderperson Jessie Fuentes

Boulevard Landmark District Extension Project

The “Logan Square Boulevards District” is a significant part of our community's history and character. An extension of this Landmark District is currently being considered. This process typically takes 6 to 9 months and includes communication and notices throughout the process.

This project builds on decades of historic preservation work and reflects the ongoing commitment of the 26th Ward to encouraging sustainable development and maintaining the unique identity of our neighborhoods.

You can learn more about the project, review FAQs, and submit your thoughts at the26thward.org/boulevard-landmarking.

26th Ward Zoning

The 26th Ward's zoning process requires anyone requesting a zoning change to first complete a zoning intake form. After review, they present their request to the Zoning Advisory Committee and answer questions. In some cases, they may also present at a community input meeting.

We are currently reviewing zoning change requests for the following properties.

Administrative ICE Warrant VS. Judicial Warrant

🔹 Administrative ICE Warrant (First Image - SAMPLE)

  • Issued by: DHS, not a court.

  • Purpose: Allows ICE to arrest for immigration violations.

  • Limitations: Does not allow entry into your home without consent.

  • Key Detail: Signed by an immigration officer, not a judge.

🔹 Judicial Warrant (Second Image)

  • Issued by: A U.S. District Court.

  • Purpose: Authorizes law enforcement to enter, search, or seize property/individuals.

  • Authority: Signed by a judge, allows entry without consent.

⚠️ Why It Matters:
An ICE administrative warrant does not grant officers the right to enter your home—only a judicial warrant does. Always ask to see the warrant, verify details, and seek legal help if needed. For assistance, contact legal professionals or trusted community organizations.
