Neighbors, This week has been a productive one. Due to the advocacy of families and staff at multiple schools in the ward, we have three projects that are currently underway, and a few more in the works. I’m proud to invest in our educational institutions particularly because we involve community input - including youth input. There are few spaces where young people are centered and empowered to speak their mind and design their physical spaces. Below is a list of the projects. Moos Elementary - participatory budgeting playground upgrades Pablo Casals School of Excellence & Cameron Magnet School (36th Ward) - Central Park & Potomac participatory budgeting pedestrian upgrades and potential viaduct mural Funston Elementary - exploring turf upgrades to soccer field

This week the Community Safety Committee conducted a safety walk on the 1700 & 1800 blocks of Kedvale after having received calls from neighbors concerned about their safety. Joined by ALSO, we knocked on every door and spoke to over 30 residents. During safety walks, we provided neighbors with our We Keep Us Safe window placard that lists several city and social services agency resources all related to safety, emergency and non-emergency services. We distributed Immigration Know Your Rights information and we informed neighbors of our next ward night pop-up scheduled for Monday, March 10th at Barreto’s Boys & Girls Club. Wednesday, I attended the grand opening of Not Just Cookies, a bakery in the 26th Ward! 🎉 The event was a huge success, with neighbors of all ages coming together to enjoy delicious cookies, including keto and sugar-free options. The celebration featured a raffle with gifts from the Chicago Blackhawks, incredible community energy, and the official ribbon cutting to welcome Johnathon Bush and his award-winning bakery to the ward! Johnathon's journey from learning to bake with his grandmother to growing a thriving business with support from the BACP Good Food Grant is exactly the kind of entrepreneurship we are proud to uplift. Let us continue to support the fantastic local shops that make our ward special! |

On Thursday, I celebrated the grand opening of the new CPS office of Multilingual-Multicultural Education (OMME) at a ribbon-cutting ceremony in our ward. Located in a revitalized CPS preschool building on the 3300 block of West Evergreen, this new office brings a wealth of resources and support to our community. OMME is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience for all language learners by promoting native language instruction, developing English language skills, and supporting bilingual and dual language programs. We’re thrilled to see this building transformed into a vibrant hub for cultural and educational growth. This addition will empower educators, students, and families with the tools they need to succeed, and we look forward to the positive impact it will have in our schools and community. |

Another resource to add is that we have the opportunity of partnering up with Family Focus to provide support to households with applying for public benefits such as the medical card, SNAP and redeterminations. The “Logan Square Boulevards District” is a significant part of our community's history and character. An extension of this Landmark District is currently being evaluated. This project builds on decades of historic preservation work and reflects the ongoing commitment of the 26th Ward to maintaining the unique identity of our neighborhoods. UPDATE: On Thursday, March 6, 2025, the Commission on Chicago Landmarks meeting will consider whether to initiate the consideration process for possible Chicago Landmark designation of an extension to the Logan Square Landmark District on Humboldt and Sacramento Boulevards. The “Logan Square Boulevards District” is a significant part of our community's history and character. An extension would build on decades of historic preservation work and reflect the ongoing commitment of the 26th Ward to encourage sustainable development and safeguard our community’s historic character. A Commission vote to recommend preliminary landmark status would formally initiate the consideration process. This process typically takes 6 to 9 months and would include communication and notices throughout the process. |

Prevent Sewer Issues This Winter |
|
Cold weather can lead to serious sewer problems. If you notice water backing up from a drain, pipe, tub, or wall, call 311 immediately and report a Water in Basement Complaint to prevent costly damage. What to Expect: Report to 311 under Water in Basement Complaint. Inspection determines if the issue is in the City’s main sewer or your private line. If referred to the Private Drain Program (PDP), hire a Licensed & Bonded Plumber. Plumber coordinates with the City for inspection. Inspection Day: A City Inspector and plumber confirm if the issue is on the City or private side.
If the problem is on the City’s side, the City will handle repairs. If on private property, homeowners are responsible for hiring a contractor. This program is for residential buildings with four units or less. Commercial and mixed-use properties are not eligible. Act now to prevent bigger issues this winter. |
